My First Makeover

This is my first attempt at re-finishing a piece of furniture. I am thrilled about the results. I was a little intimidated at first, then I decided to just go for it. I payed $25.00 for this piece, I have been looking for something to go at the top of my stairs and I wasn't willing to pay anywhere from $800.00 on up. When I saw this I had a vision of how I thought it would turn out and I'm glad it did, especially since I really didn't know what I was doing.

This was an old stereo, with the insides torn out. I knocked the speaker part out and then primed the whole thing. The inside has all different kinds of wood in it and hadn't ever been finished. I wanted the inside finished, so I primed that as well. (See the end table in the background? It's next)

I painted the whole thing black.

Then I wanted to put bead board in the place where the speaker was. I waited to this last to make it easier to paint the inside of the cabinet.

Once we got the bead board installed, I painted it inside and out. Sanded the edges and screwed the lid back on. See the two holes in the front? I still need to get some kind of handles on. I haven't decided what I want yet. But other than that it is complete and I am really excited how it turned out. And I am excited to do more!

A side view.

Another look.

  1. Amazing transformation! I have a similar old radio cabinet sitting in my basement. Your project just may inspire me to get off my duff and do something with it.

  2. That looks really good! What a great idea to add the beadboard. It's gorgeous!

  3. that is great - i would have never guess what it was 'before' - great job!
